SAG-AFTRA Reaches Tentative AI Protection Deal with Major Video Game Companies
Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has struck a provisional agreement with leading video game studios, including Activision and Electronic Arts, to address growing concerns over artificial intelligence''s impact on voice actors. The deal, announced after months of negotiations, establishes safeguards against unauthorized digital replication of performers'' voices and likenesses.
The union had warned that unchecked AI posed an existential threat to gaming industry performers, citing the widespread availability of voice cloning tools. "This agreement defends performers'' livelihoods in the AI age," said chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, marking a significant victory for labor protections in emerging tech sectors.
Other companies involved in the negotiations include Epic Games, WB Games, and Disney Character Voices. The breakthrough comes after SAG-AFTRA members initiated strike actions in July 2024 when initial talks stalled over AI-related demands.
